Château de Vascœuil: art, history and gardens near Les Gîtes de Flaubert

During a stay at Les Gîtes de Flaubert, the Château de Vascœuil offers a local outing combining history, contemporary art and gardens. Set in the Andelle valley, it is a place to slow down and explore a different part of Normandy’s heritage.

A château with a long history

The château’s medieval octagonal tower, 17th-century dovecote and restored buildings reflect several centuries of Norman history. The historian Jules Michelet stayed here regularly and worked on his History of France. His study has been reconstructed in the tower.

An open-air art collection

The Centre d’Art et d’Histoire opened in 1970. Its temporary exhibitions bring modern and contemporary art into a historic setting.

The gardens contain a permanent collection of more than 50 sculptures. A walk between the trees, lawns and planted paths brings together artworks and landscape. Check the current exhibition programme before planning your visit.

Gardens to explore during the opening season

Formal French gardens, an English-style landscaped park, water and mature trees give the grounds their character. Depending on the season, changing foliage and light create different views for a quiet walk or photography.

Opening dates and access arrangements vary. Consult the château directly for the current season, tickets and group visits; a visit is separate from your accommodation booking.

Build a day around your visit

You can plan a half-day at Vascœuil, then add another stop if time and opening hours allow:

  • the Abbaye de Fontaine-Guérard;
  • Lyons-la-Forêt and the surrounding forest;
  • the Château de Martainville;
  • a walk in the Andelle valley.

Check the routes and travel times between the places you choose. Families, history enthusiasts and garden lovers can adapt the day to their interests without trying to fit everything into one outing.

Return to your cottage in the Andelle valley

Les Gîtes de Flaubert provide a countryside base for exploring the area around Rouen, the Andelle valley and the Norman Vexin. After visiting the château, return to the living areas and outdoor spaces of the cottages you have booked.

Whether you are travelling as a couple, with family or with friends, combine heritage visits with time together at the estate. Tell us your dates, headcount and bedroom needs so we can suggest an available configuration.

Consult the official Château de Vascœuil website for current visiting information.
